Coast guards wrestle ferry bomb threat suspect at Philippines port
This is the dramatic moment coast guard marshals wrestled a suspect who claimed to have planted bombs on a ferry at a port in the Philippines.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) received a report from a passenger that the suspect Salahuddin Absin Sapii 'tried to kill him and was running amok' on the ship docked at Bongao Town in Tawi-Tawi province at around 8:24 pm on November 22.
Authorities arrived and were about to arrest Salahuddin, but he suddenly punched a Philippine Marine Corps sea marshal and tried to steal his service firearm.
Two PCG marshals, CG SN1 Christian Marquez and CG SN1 Elmer Dacanay, intervened and tackled the crazed man, who then shouted that he had planted two bombs on the vessel.
All passengers were ordered to disembark as K9 sniffer dogs scoured the ship for explosives. When none were found, the travellers were allowed to re-board.
The PCG said Salahuddin was hauled to the Philippine National Police Bongao Station to face legal action.
In a statement, Coast Guard Admiral Gavan said: 'The successful arrest of the bomb threat suspect who ran amok on board proves how professional, competent, and courageous our Coast Guard sea marshals are in fulfilling their mandated functions.'
