STORYLINE:
A total of 2,024 Cambodian primary school students have recently received donations of bicycles from the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD).
These new bicycles not only help reduce their commuting time but also brings about joy and hope for those unprivileged children.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Khmer): HONG RAKSA, 12-year-old student
"My old bike was small and when its chain fell off, it was difficult for me to put it back on, and sometimes, its tire went flat during a ride. I feel elated to receive this new bicycle, so I will be able to get to school on time."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Khmer): PEN SOVANVATHANA, 12-year-old student
"When I went to school on foot, I always sweated a lot because it was hot and my clothes got stained with sweat. I feel very happy because I have never had a bicycle before."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Khmer): LY SILIN, Principal of Chhork Kandoal Primary School
"These bicycles are very useful for the students to ride to school on time and they have also helped reduce their families' expenses on transportation.
If parents use their own money to buy a bicycle for their children, they need to spend about 250,000 riels (about 62.5 U.S. dollars) for a bicycle.
With the donation, each of the families has saved 250,000 riels, so they can use this money to spend on other things such as stationery and clothes.
My school, the Chhork Kandoal Primary School, has received 100 bicycles, and they have been distributed to poor students and those who live 3 to 5 kilometers away from school."
SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): WANG HAOYU, Representative of China Foundation for Rural Development
"These bicycles can significantly reduce students' commuting time to school, giving them more time to study in the classroom. At the same time, the bicycle can also be used by their family members during the students' spare time."
