SOUNDBITE (English): NAJUM IQBAL, Head of communications, ICRC's Regional Delegation for East Asia
"I think China has definitely an important global role to play as one of the important actors in the global stage. And more so, since we have observed that China is increasingly playing an active role in global humanitarian assistance and global confrontations as well, trying to play a role of a mediator, trying to talk about the protection and assistance of the civilian population. We have seen it during Afghanistan crisis. We have seen it during Ukraine. We are currently seeing it during Gaza, Sudan, you name it. So in that aspect, in that environment, we also believe that China's actions and China's policies can impact the lives of those people living in different countries affected by armed conflict. So from the ICRC perspective, we are really proud of the dialogue and exchanges the ICRC has developed with its Chinese counterparts over the past few years in furthering those humanitarian understanding on unfolding the respect and promotion of international humanitarian law, and so on, so forth."
