A furious Korean tourist who was allegedly scammed by his Thai girlfriend went on a rampage and threatened to jump off his hotel balcony.

The visitor, Seungwon Jeong, 41, said he had lent the money to his lover who then used it for a 'business venture'. But after receiving the funds, she suddenly disappeared and could no longer be reached.

Enraged at his lover's apparent betrayal, the Korean man walked onto the eighth-floor balcony of the City Garden Pattaya Condominium in Pattaya, Thailand, on November 26, wielding a fruit-peeling knife as he hurled wads of Thai banknotes off the building.

The 100,000 THB (2,850 USD) cash fluttered down into a swimming pool as he threatened concerned onlookers he would jump if they approached.

Police Major Pichit Chamnuan of the Pattaya City Police Station said officers received a report at 4 pm.

Cops arrived at the scene with medics and a Korean interpreter to set up inflatable fall protection equipment and convince Seungwon to stand down. After an hour of tense negotiations, he eventually re-entered his room and allowed police to question him.

Speaking to officials, the tourist said he had been in Pattaya for more than a month and that he had been stressed after being allegedly scammed by his girlfriend.

He said he had been 'under a lot of stress' over the deception, causing him to blow up and go berserk.

Seungwon was transported to a hospital as he claimed to be suffering a heart disease.

Police were contacting his relatives in South Korea to inform them of the situation, as they feared Seungwon would go on another rampage.

Former fishing village Pattaya became popular with American troops on 'rest and relaxation' breaks in the 1960s when the U.S. military had bases in Thailand. In the ensuing years, the coastal resort spawned into a sex-tourism hellscape.

Embarrassed officials have made progress in gentrifying the region with family tourism projects but a ravenous nightlife industry and corrupt police have hampered their efforts, with undesirables from all nations still attracted to the seedy city.
