Doctors and health workers working in Gaza are terrified about the diseases that are beginning to appear in that territory and how that will "devastate children, whose immune systems are severely weakened by the lack of food," the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters from southern Gaza, UNICEF spokesman James Elder quoted a doctor at Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City as explaining that the threats to children's health "are largely coming from the air and, at the moment, from the ground in the form of diarrhea and respiratory infections."

As negotiations continue for the release of more hostages in exchange for an extension of the pause in hostilities, UNICEF expressed dismay at the large number of young people fighting for their lives, "with horrific war wounds, lying on makeshift mattresses in parking lots, in gardens, everywhere. Doctors have to make horrendous decisions and prioritize some over others.
