An Israeli family were reunited after spending 40 days held as hostages in Gaza.

Aviv Asher, 2, her sister Raz Asher, 3, and their mother Doron Katz reunited with father Yoni Katz at the Schneider Children's Medical Center in Petah Tikva, Israel as part of a truce deal between Islamist militant group Hamas and Israel.

Footage shows the emotional meeting as the family huddled together on a hospital bed after more than a month apart.

Raz told her dad: 'I dreamt that we were going home.'

Yoni replied: 'Did you dream that you were going home? Now the dream came true, that's it. Soon we'll be going back to our home.'

The girls and their mum were among the people abducted by Hamas in the October 7 attack on Israel.

The assault had killed at least 100 Israeli civilians and injured at least 800 more, stoking the long-running conflict between Israel and Gaza.

Israel has this week agreed to a ceasefire in return for the release of more hostages.
