Aid is starting to reach Gaza City but the capital of the Gaza Strip has been turned into a ghost town, with many of its buildings destroyed and much of its population having evacuated south.

Footage shot on Wednesday 29 November showed destruction in the Al-Zahra neighbourhood. Aid trucks are also seen in southern Gaza.

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) reported Wednesday that humanitarian assistance arrived at its shelters in northern Gaza for the first time since the war broke out last month.

"As we drove around Gaza City it looked like a ghost town; all the streets were deserted," said Thomas White, UNRWA's director of Gaza Affairs is reported to have said.

"The impact of the heavy airstrikes and shelling is very visible. The roads are riddled with craters, complicating the delivery of assistance," he added.
