STORYLINE:
A Croatian scholar who is the first to receive a doctorate of Chinese philosophy in Croatia said that Chinese philosophy offers wonderful answers that can stimulate cross-cultural dialogue.
Ivana Buljan is teaching at the Department of Sinology at the University of Zagreb.
She finished a two-year post-graduate course in Chinese philosophy and Chinese language at universities in China.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Croatian): IVANA BULJAN, Head of Department of Sinology at University of Zagreb
"My interest in Chinese philosophy began, very unexpectedly, at the time when I was dealing with contemporary Western philosophy. I was dealing with Kierkegaard and his issues of Western philosophy. And this is where my interest in Chinese philosophy started. I was interested in how certain questions and problems, philosophical questions and problems to which Western philosophy had no answers, were solved in Chinese philosophy."
Buljan believes that dialogue between different cultures is important as it is the only possible way to resolve certain disputes.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Croatian): IVANA BULJAN, Head of Department of Sinology at University of Zagreb
"I believe that cross-cultural dialogue is not at a level high enough. In particular, I must underscore the insufficient representation of Chinese philosophy within European philosophical discourse. And my goal and one of the goals of the European Association of Chinese Philosophy is to raise the status of Chinese philosophy, because we believe that Chinese philosophy offers wonderful answers, very important answers that can stimulate this cross-cultural dialogue."
