Cornwall's controversial cliff top development site collapses into the sea at Whipsiderry beach, Newquay, Cornwall, UK
Cliff protestors fears have been realised as a huge section of unstable sea cliff has collapsed into the sea. The Prince and Princess of Wales were drawn increasingly closer to a hugely unpopular development in a seaside town. At Whipsiderry beach a huge concreting and drilling exercise on behalf of the developers is already temporarily suspended after the duchy of Cornwall responded to alerts from a newly formed protest group called Save Whipsiderry cliffs, The original planning permission granted by Cornwall Council a number of years ago stipulated that cliff stabilisation work would have to be carried out to allow the development to happen. Unfortunately exactly what form such stabilisation would take was not detailed at the time. The clifftop development of several houses would be made available for sale at a rumoured 1.5 million pounds each. Large scale public protests at the site have taken place and peacefull protesters concerned at drilling and concreting at the base of the cliffs is highly inappropriate. Members of the public have Been filmed dragged across the public beach by security staff. The protest group Save Whipsiderry cliffs formed by locals Andrew Robby and Lyndsey Young alerted the Duchy of cornwall who moved quickly to suspend access to the cliff workers. The Building work is currently suspended until the 1st of February 2024 whilst the MMO engage further geological site tests, the developers Living Quarter Properties Ltd intend to resume work on this date. The geology expert witness Gus Horsley, for the protest group, addressed a public meeting of the town council last summer and declared a major cliff fall of hundreds of tons was in his opinion imminent. After numerous cliff falls subsequently his prediction has now come true. The public footpath which separated the site from the cliff edge has now disappeared along with a section of the actual building site in a major fall and Cornwall Council warn that yet more major falls are imminent. It has been necessary to shut the steep public path down the adjacent cliff to the beach, this in turn has removed the safe escape route for beach walkers coming from Watergate bay, no other routes up the cliffs are available between Porth and Watergate. The development on a site eroding an almost monthly basis is a huge cause for concern.
