STORYLINE:

Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Martin Chungong said that COP28 will offer an opportunity to assess global efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

"It is an opportunity to take stock of what the world has done in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. I want to take the voice of parliaments to COP28 to get parliaments to play the oversight role that is incumbent of them, to see what progress has been made by their governments in implementing the nationally determined contributions.
Parliaments will be called upon to hold governments to account in this respect and also commit to greening their budgets, for instance, putting in place policies that are climate-friendly.
It (COP28) gives us a prime opportunity for parliamentarians to make their voices heard loud and clear on what their expectations are of their governments in the face of the climate emergency that the global community is facing today."
In 2024, the IPU, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, will be holding its General Assembly in Geneva. It will be an opportunity too, for parliamentarians from across the world to review progress on actions that are required for alleviating climate change, the negative effects of climate change."

The 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is taking place in Dubai from Nov. 30 to Dec. 12.
