A volcano in western Indonesia erupted, belching a column of ash around three kilometres into the sky and reportedly causing the deaths of 11 hikers.

Footage filmed in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra Province on Sunday (December 3, 2023), shows a huge eruption from crater, filming from near the peak.

Rescue workers reportedly found the bodies of 11 hikers while searching for people trapped on the mountain.

The filmer, Edison Sikumbang, said, the mountain erupted after a roar.

“There was a booming sound in the sky until the earth shook..This is the most powerful eruption in more than 30 years," Sikumbang added.

Additional footage shows car drivers driving under volcanic rain. He turned back and went home, canceling the trip.

Ahmad Rifandi, an official at the Mount Marapi monitoring station on Bukittinggi, commented that as of 9:01 pm Marapi has erupted 17 times.

"The column of ash was observed in grey colour with thick intensity leaning toward the east. The eruption is still ongoing,” Rifandi added.
