Giant anticyclonic rotating auroral vortex fills up the nightsky in Iceland

Buy video

while on yet another aurorahunting trip to Iceland,
arrived near Husavik in northern Iceland on october 20th, 2023

that night we stayed at Brekka guesthouses south of Husavik...
We always re-locate every day based on last-available short-range cloud forecast to maximize getting clear nightskies and thus see northern lights very often, much more frequently than if we simply stayed in Reykjavik just hoping for local clear skies. Iceland is often very very cloudy - but not everywhere, because of the "rain shadow effect" .

we watched the aurora much of the night, and it showed up in multiple colours and forms and shapes...
I was travelling this time with a friend from the U.K. who had travelled to Iceland before but never seen aurora.

shown here : in the pre-dawn hours at about 03h35 AM october 21st, this giant rotating vortex occured.

filmed in realtime with Sony a7s2 , Sigma lens 20mm f/1.4 plus a Viltrox speedbooster 0.71,
resulting in 14mm ultrawide view with vignetting , at f/1.0 .
