STORYLINE:

STANDUP 1 (English): WU YAO, Xinhua correspondent
"At the World Media Summit underway in China's Guangzhou and Kunming, top media leaders, scholars and industry experts have gathered to discuss various topics, share insights, address challenges and strengthen cooperation.
Among them, a few China watchers have caught my attention with their fluent Chinese. Many of them have lived, studied and worked in China for many years."

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): HALEY CARMEN TEMPLE DONOVAN, Features writer, Ottawa Life Magazine
"I've spent lots of time in China and I've seen various sides of China."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): CHUN WAI WONG, Malaysian National News Agency Chairman
"I come to China, at least once or twice a year. I learned a lot from China."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): MARK LEVINE, Professor of Minzu University of China
"I've been living in China for 18 years."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): FRANCISCO ALBERTO TAIANA, Historian, sinologist, Argentina's National News Agency Telam
"I lived 2 years in Beijing. I managed to actually travel to all 34 territorial divisions."

SOUNDBITE 5 (English): ZAFAR UDDIN MAHMOOD, Former Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan
"I came here as a student in 1976."

STANDUP 2 (English): WU YAO, Xinhua correspondent
"And I discussed with them a topic concerning many media professionals both in and outside of China - how the world can understand China better."

How the world can understand China better?

SOUNDBITE 6 (English): ZAFAR UDDIN MAHMOOD, Former Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan
"Misunderstandings and misperceptions are there, all over the world. But people didn't know."

SOUNDBITE 7 (English): CHUN WAI WONG, Malaysian National News Agency Chairman
"We rely a lot on news from the Western news organizations, and many of them are inaccurate or even biased, not objective. If you want to talk about China, to report about China, you must live in China."

SOUNDBITE 8 (English): ZAFAR UDDIN MAHMOOD, Former Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan
"The pace of change in China is very, very fast. You have to keep yourself updated with that. What the people of the world of today should know is what happened in China during the past so many years. China has brought 800 million people out of poverty. That's not a small thing. It's a great favor to the world. Have these people being poor, it would have been a pressure, not only in China, but the whole world."

SOUNDBITE 9 (English): FRANCISCO ALBERTO TAIANA, Historian, sinologist, Argentina's National News Agency Telam
"Ultimately, diplomacy is made by people and individuals, not only by governments, and I think that the opportunity to have personal encounters and forge personal relations is absolutely crucial for international cooperation."

China's development story is one of a kind in the world. Sometimes, an ever evolving and fast growing China is hard to fathom for many outsiders. But when the two sides are both making efforts, when you lean in and listen closely, there is always a way for mutual understanding.
