At least eight people have died in the aftermath of a cyclone that formed in the Bay of Bengal and has hit several areas of southeastern India, with particular devastation in the city of Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, according to a preliminary balance sheet provided by local authorities.

Cyclone "Michaung" has made landfall with maximum sustained winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour and, after wreaking havoc in Chennai, now threatens the state of Andhra Pradesh, where storm warnings have been activated in at least eight districts, reports the NDTV channel.

The Indian Home Minister, Amit Shah, has contacted authorities in the affected regions to coordinate response measures and offer the help of the central government, with a view to an initial emergency response but also to reconstruction work.
