Nineteen workers were injured when their shuttle bus overturned in Thailand.

The locals were returning home from a factory in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province when their bus veered off the road and flipped over on December 7.

Police Captain Panya Ammartsena of the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Police Station received a report at 8:30 pm.

At the scene, authorities found the bus lying on its side as 19 injured passengers who climbed out of the vehicle were waiting for responders.

Police Captain Panya said: 'There were 19 injured workers - 17 women and two men. They have been taken to the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital. One of them was seriously wounded.'

Bus driver Komol, 58, said he was taking the passengers home to Saraburi province when he drove over a deep pothole on the road. He claimed to have lost control as the bus lurched on the uneven surface.

The wrecked bus has been towed away and the road was passable.

Meanwhile, Komol was detained at the police station for further questioning and to face potential charges.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
