Century-old houses in Bangkok's Makkasan area will be demolished to make way for a 'smart city' redevelopment project in Thailand.

The aging homes, seen in the video, near the Makkasan Airport Rail Link Station are slated to be torn down in line with the CP Group redevelopment plan.

The group said the land will be converted into a mixed-use area, with modern residences and malls, while the Makkasan Station will serve as a key hub for the under-construction Don Mueang–Suvarnabhumi–U-Tapao high-speed railway linking three airports in Thailand.

The land was originally granted by King Rama V as a part of the Makkasan Train Factory, which was inaugurated in 1910, before the factory was relocated to Chonburi this August.

The houses in the area were originally constructed for railway maintenance workers, and they are still occupied to this day.

In the midst of these changes, one of the sheds at the Makkasan Railway Maintenance Depot has been given a heritage status and will not be demolished.
