STORYLINE:

The Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage recently launched a major campaign to rehabilitate the ancient Khan Marjan, one of the most famous khans of Baghdad.

Khan Marjan, built in the 14th century, is located in downtown Baghdad on the eastern bank of the Tigris River. It was once used as an inn for traveling merchants.

The two-story khan is distinguished in its Islamic-style architecture. Its perforated windows are made of wood and decorated with arabesques.

Hashim Abu Qamar, supervisor of the rehabilitation project, told Xinhua that the engineers and archaeologists of the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage are working on maintaining and rehabilitating heritage places in Baghdad to save them from neglect.

"We are working here in Khan Marjan to restore damaged places, but we preserve the original structure and use the same construction materials used in its building at that time to preserve the historical and heritage identity of this ancient site," Abu Qamar added.
