A large, dead fin whale washed ashore at the Pacific Beach in San Diego on Sunday, December 10.

The 52-foot long female juvenile whale showed no signs of being struck by a ship, so the NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center started an investigation. Authorities used heavy equipment to pull the carcass back into the water and towed it out to sea. The whale sank when they reached 1.2 miles from shore, according to reports.
