The River Rothay in Grasmere rose 1.7 Metres in the space of 4 hours this morning as a result of a period of torrential rain. The Environment Agency have started work to clear out rubble from the river bed after a huge landslip that occurred during Storm Desmond, but work had to stop due to the sheer volume of water in the river.

The Rothay broke its banks in a few places, but as the rain eased off the levels started dropping. It took 6 hours for the river level to drop by a metre.
