Some students in China's Macao Special Administrative Region have recently got a chance to get close to the art of Peking Opera as a group of professional singers from the National Peking Opera Company paid a visit to the region.
The singers gave lectures, performed several classic episodes, and taught students to actually perform on the stage.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): WONG TAK CHON, Principal of Tong Sin Tong Middle School
"We are very grateful for the visit by the National Peking Opera Company delegation. Their lectures and performances have helped our students learn more about this art form."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): Student
"I was most impressed by the scene of horse-riding in the piece about Wang Zhaojun. I thought it was really difficult as they didn't have real horses on stage. But they did a wonderful job of representing the scene."
Peking Opera artists Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu led the group. According to them, the activity aims to make chances for young people to feel the charm of Peking Opera at close quarters.
SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): LI SHENGSU, Peking Opera artist
"Our visit is not about making the children learn something specific, but rather to let them understand Peking Opera and plant a seed of this art form in their hearts."
SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): YU KUIZHI, Peking Opera artist
"By performing a play or a scene, we narrate a piece of history, explaining the splendid civilization and culture of China to the students. The has profound significance."
