A builder was crushed by steel equipment while a road was being constructed in Thailand.

Burmese man Thet Naing Lin, 35, was working at the construction site near the Soi 82 area of the Rama II road, where a flyover was being built in Bangkok on December 15.

However, he was crushed by a heavy concrete mould when it plunged from a crane while being moved.

The object struck the hapless worker's back, while another builder Kyaw Kyaw, 44, was seriously injured. Both were rushed by emergency services to the PMG Hospital, but Thet Naing Lin had died from the severity of his wounds.

Police Lieutenant Weerawat Lakchai Nong said the accident happened at 4:45 pm local time.

A worker at the site said the crane's grip was disconnected while lifting the concrete mould, causing the equipment to fall on top of the builders.

Police said they were investigating the scene to find the cause of the collapse, with the Expressway Authority of Thailand ordering that construction be suspended for a week.

Meanwhile, Suttikan Boonsut, director of Social Security Bangkok Area 11, said that the Burmese men were legal employees of the construction company, but their social security registration was being investigated as they were both foreign workers.

He said Kyaw Kyaw was covered for hospital fees up to 50,000 THB (1,430 USD) and 70 per cent of his monthly wage while he recovers. Meanwhile, the deceased Thet Naing Lin's family will be compensated 880,000 THB (25,200 USD)

He said: 'If the workers were not registered under Social Security, the responsible company must compensate them at the same rate as Thai workers.

'The company would be deemed in violation of the Social Security Act for not registering them within 30 days, incurring a penalty of 20,000 baht in fines, a potential 6-month jail sentence, or both.'

In March, a trailer truck crashed into a construction site along the highway, causing severe traffic congestion.

Two months later, on May 7, a Thai worker was killed when the concrete beam he was standing on plunged onto traffic.

Thai media reported that there have been 2,242 accidents and 130 deaths along Rama II from 2018 to 2022, while there were 262 accidents and 12 fatalities from January to April this year.
