Research teams flew over the Sundhjuka volcano crater in Iceland following eruptions on Monday evening.

The eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula lit up the night sky at 10.17pm amid a series of earthquakes hit the area.

In a collaborative effort, the TF-EIR helicopter of the Icelandic Coast Guard, accompanied by scientists from the Civil Protection Department, the Meteorological Office, and the University of Iceland, conducted a flyover of the Sundhjuka crater.

The mission aimed to assess the extent of the volcanic activity.

The scientific team on the helicopter worked to gather crucial data related to the ongoing eruption.

They said the joint initiative enhanced understanding of the evolving situation, contributing to improved safety measures and preparedness for potential impacts.
