Rowers Cling to Life After Boat Capsizes off Treacherous UK Coast in Whitby
This footage was filmed and produced 16 December 2023.
In a dramatic rescue operation, the RNLI swiftly responded to an emergency call on Saturday, December 16, after a rowboat capsized off the coast of Whitby. The experienced rowers, attempting to return to the shelter of the harbour, faced difficulties when a strong cross-shore wind picked up.
Having exited the pier ends in calm conditions, the rowers decided to head back to the harbour. However, during the attempt to turn their boat, it capsized, leaving the pair in the water. Signalling another rower to dial 999 and request the Coastguard, they anticipated challenges in a buddy rescue due to the conditions.
Jonathan Marr, helm on the inshore lifeboat, emphasized the urgency of the situation, praising the casualties for wearing lifejackets and climbing onto the upturned hull. Despite drifting a mile offshore, the RNLI volunteers reached them in time, highlighting the significance of capsize training.
Transferred to the inshore lifeboat, the rowers were brought to the lifeboat station for a hypothermia check by waiting paramedics. The RNLI emphasizes the importance of safety measures, including wearing lifejackets, carrying means of calling for help, checking conditions before heading out, and undergoing relevant training for emergencies.
