Thames shipwreck's mast removal described as delicate by Kent MP, UK
MP Gordon Henderson has described an operation to remove a Thames shipwreck's masts as 'delicate'.
SS Richard Montgomery sank with 1400 tonnes of explosives in 1944 a mile off Sheerness in Kent.
The UK Government are now keen to remove the wreck's three masts as soon as possible in March 2024 due to safety fears.
Mr Henderson told Kent Online "there has been a delay in starting the work because of previously unknown objects on the seabed necessitating a different approach to what is a delicate operation".
Footage shows the wreck today (December 24).
Footage also shows famous German writer Uwe Johnson's house along Marine Parade which has direct views of the wreck.
Uwe Johnson lived in Sheerness from 1974-1984.
