STORYLINE:

Central China's Henan Province has been stepping up efforts to adopt green heating methods instead of burning coal during the winter heating season.

In Zhecheng County of Shangqiu City, a local renewable energy company is generating electricity by incinerating household waste.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LI XIAOHU, Deputy general manager of local renewable energy company
"Household waste used to be disposed by landfill, which could pollute soil. Our waste incineration plant is able to process all household waste of the county. The two units here can generate 850,000 kWh of electricity every day, which can meet the daily electricity demand of the whole county."

Besides household waste, agricultural waste such as corn stalks can also be used to generate green electricity.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LI XIAOHU, Deputy general manager of local renewable energy company
"These are the stalks that we've collected this year for this winter heating season. We've prepared sufficient agricultural waste to guarantee the electricity supply for residents."

Meanwhile, more and more rural households in Henan are adopting green methods for heating.
SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): CAO XIUYONG, Party secretary of Weidikou Village, Zhecheng County, Henan Province
"Now, in our village, we basically use air conditioners for heating. It's much cleaner and more convenient compared with burning coal."
