More than 20,000 households have been swamped by floods following heavy rain in southern Thailand.

Footage shows the muddy torrents swamping homes in Narathiwat province on December 25 close to the border with neighboring Malaysia amid downpours since Friday.

Interior Ministry spokesman Traisuree Taisaranakul said 24 districts across the provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani, Songkhla, and Satun have been worst affected by floods.

While satellite imagery showed that 142 square kilometres were now underwater.

Officials said that flooding has impacted 19,624 households across the region.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and other ministers will visit Narathiwat province - the worst affected - to asses the damage.

Southern Thailand is reaching the climax of its annual monsoon rainy season.
