STORYLINE:

A viral dance "Kemusan" from China has recently swept over social media, fueling a wave of dance challenges among young people both online and offline.

The "Kemusan" dance routine was widely believed to originate from a dance created and performed by a wedding guest from south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region more than two years ago.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): GUO SIYUAN, Street dance teacher in Guangxi
"Actually, 'Kemusan' dance requires coordination between hands and feet, especially a dancing skill to make quick shifts of the center of gravity on feet. The dancing style is kind of like the early breakdancing and sometimes it gives me a feeling like I'm having a Mongolian dance."

In November, video clips showing employees of Haidilao, a hot-pot chain, repeatedly dancing "Kemusan" to entertain customers made it to the internet's hottest-trending topics.

"Kemusan" then gained overseas fans soon, with videos of the dance routine being widely viewed on overseas social media.

The viral trend of "Kemusan" represents a preference for personal and emotive expressions over regularity and high-sounding narratives, as well as an emphasis on personality.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): Street dance enthusiast in Guangxi
"When we saw the video clips of 'Kemusan' dance and tried it out ourselves, we would feel incredibly cheerful, excited and dynamic. With the dance, our cultural confidence is showcased in other parts of the world, and this could also become a shared symbol for many young people."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): Street dance enthusiast in Guangxi
"We used to dance the 'Gangnam Style' from South Korea, but now we have our own 'Kemusan' dance which has attracted so many people from all over the world. As a dance enthusiast, I hope more people can join and find joy in the 'Kemusan' dance."
