STORYLINE:

Shanxi Province in north China was once deemed unsuitable for tea cultivation, due to its low temperatures and scarce rainfall.

However, in a rural area of Yuncheng in Shanxi, a woman has led a team of villagers to successfully cultivate a vast area of high-altitude tea.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): CHEN XIAOYUAN, Founder of a tea factory in Wangjiahe Village, Yuncheng City
"We came to the Wangjiahe Village of Sijiao Township in 2008 to experiment with tea cultivation. After five years of efforts, the first batch of tea was produced in 2013."

After years of cultivation, Chen's factory has expanded its tea plantation to around 33.3 hectares.

Tea cultivation has brought increased income for local villagers, and helped advance rural revitalization.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): FU HUIXIA, Worker at the tea factory
"My family has more than 2 mu of land (0.13 hectares), and we have leased all of it to the tea factory. We can receive over 1,000 yuan (around 140 USD) for it every year. And now I also work at the tea factory, earning several thousand yuan every month. This also allows me to easily take care of my children and the elders in the family."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): CHEN XIAOYUAN, Founder of a tea factory in Wangjiahe Village
"Currently, the tea factory has engaged over 100 households in the village, through which the villagers have also increased income. Their annual incomes range from about 10,000 to 20,000 yuan (1,400 USD to 2,800 USD)."
