Storm Gerrit causes rare below zero low tide in Kent, UK

Buy video

Storm Gerrit caused an ultra rare sub-zero low tide to occur in Kent, UK this morning (December 28).

The unusually low tide at Sheerness was caused by a negative surge tide early this morning caused by the weather system.

The height of the predicted low tide should've been 0.83 metres (under normal weather conditions) - but dropped nearly a metre lower - with Sheerness tide gauge dipping just below zero metres.

Footage shows shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery's three masts fully exposed on this very rare ultra-low tide, as well as the effects on the seafront at Sheerness beach. This may be the lowest tide seen with the masts, as they are due to be removed in March next year.
