Vendors carried on selling food as waist-deep floods caused by heavy rain swamped southern Thailand over the weekend.

The locals opened their shops despite the deluge that submerged streets and homes in Narathiwat province on December 26.

Footage shows a female vendor serving food in trays at her stall next to her home as customers waded through the tall waters.

Local media reported that thousands were affected by the heavy rain, said to be the most severe the region has seen in 40 years.

Some 6,000 houses were damaged in Yala province, while around 4,000 more were ravaged by floods in Narathiwat.

Authorities have warned residents in flooded areas to protect themselves against potential hazards including illnesses, electric shocks, and venomous animals lurking in the flood.
