In a collaborative effort involving the Civil Guard, Tax Agency, and National Police, a significant drug bust unfolded in the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. On December 18, a meticulous joint operation led to the seizure of 2,000 kilos of cocaine concealed within the ballast tank of the merchant ship "Grande Francia," arriving from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The vessel, a 214-meter 'Ro-Ro' cargo transporter, was subjected to an extensive 15-hour inspection, revealing the drugs ingeniously hidden in the ballast tank. A total of 69 bales, containing 2,055 kilos of cocaine, were uncovered. The detection team also found equipment, including life jackets, geolocation devices, ropes, and food, suggesting plans for drug removal.

Six individuals, including five crew members of the ship and a Filipino citizen on the island, were arrested. The detainees, hailing from Italy, Romania, and the Philippines, along with the seized drugs, were handed over to Investigative Court number 3 of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This operation, part of ongoing information exchange with national and international agencies, underscores the persistent efforts to combat drug trafficking.
