2023 Year in Review

World Recovery
Sunny's Spotlight
STANDUP 2 (English): SUNNY ZHOU, Xinhua correspondent
"The Chinese economy has experienced a rebound since the beginning of the year. China's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 5.2 percent year on year in the first three quarters, marking the strongest performance among the world's major economies."
Many international institutions have recently upgraded China's economic growth forecasts, with the figures for 2023 all above 5 percent. Some analysts have predicted an even higher growth for 2024.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ALESSANDRO ZADRO, Head of Research at Italy-China Council Foundation
"In 2023, the Chinese economy should grow around 5.1 - 5.4%. It's performing better in the last quarter compared to the first month of the year."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): ZOON AHMED KHAN, Research Fellow at Center for China & Globalization
"As far as the predictions of the IMF are concerned, of major global observers are concerned, it is the success we have seen (in Chinese economy) during 2023."
These positive signs, according to observers, came as a result of a series of forceful and pragmatic policies and measures implemented by the Chinese government to stabilize growth and promote an opening-up.
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): ZOON AHMED KHAN, Research Fellow at Center for China & Globalization
"China has been open and supportive of globalization, of economic partnerships with all parts of the world.
Also we have major organizations and companies coming to China, being welcomed and being provided opportunities for partnerships and growth.
I think China's pragmatism is a very unique and important defining factor of China's legacy."
The past year has seen a multitude of downward pressures and an unprecedentedly adverse global landscape.
STANDUP 3 (English): SUNNY ZHOU, Xinhua correspondent
"Despite challenges at home and abroad, China has managed to press ahead with its high-quality development, galvanizing the Asia-Pacific region and the wider world with its progress, potential, and opportunities."
SOUNDBITE 4 (English): ALESSANDRO ZADRO, Head of Research at Italy-China Council Foundation
"When it comes to the digital economy and digitalization, China is a champion.
Digital economy and green transformation are the two main sectors where companies and governments (of China) are investing.
I do believe that foreign companies willing to enter Chinese market, and focus on the Chinese market, need to be aware that environmental protection, sustainability, circular economy, and waste management are some of the major sectors where China is investing and our expertise could find potential ground for cooperation in investment."
SOUNDBITE 5 (English): ZOON AHMED KHAN, Research Fellow at Center for China & Globalization
"I think one of the most impressive sectors, is the green economy. China is the country that is investing the most in renewable energies, in expediting the process of 'greenization' or greener energy production for all sorts of developing countries."
Looking to the coming year, observers say they are optimistic.
SOUNDBITE 6 (English): ALESSANDRO ZADRO, Head of Research at Italy-China Council Foundation
"I do see an opportunity. I do see a lot coming up for us in the next few years, and looking forward to China per se."
SOUNDBITE 7 (English): ZOON AHMED KHAN, Research fellow at Center for China & Globalization
"I think that trajectory of confidence in a new way of development, of creating networks, physical and also political networks of cooperation, reducing barriers is something that is strengthened with China's success and with China's strength."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Beijing.
