As the New Year beckons, a family group is alerted to storm sewage released from the South West Water storm drain leading into the tidal Gannel River which in turn empties via Crantock Beach to the open sea. This event has happened only days since the announcement that almost all Sea and river Storm outlets in England are now being monitored by sensors thus enabling real-time alerts of incidents to be circulated publicly through an automated alert system. The popular tourist destination of Crantock is particularly susceptible to these unwelcome events as three separate storm outfalls are in the Crantock Bay area. This particular incident is reported as starting at approximately 15:00 hours on the 30th of December 2023, discharges can last for many hours until the sewage system is no longer overwhelmed by heavy rainfall. The Environment agency usually regards the areas to be affected for at least 24 hours after the event finishes, precautions should be taken by swimmers and other beach and sea users during the event. The UK water industry is tasked with ending these events, the cost running into billions of pounds.
