Initial claims for unemployment benefit in the United States reached a total of 218,000 applications the week before Christmas, an increase of 12,000 people over the previous mark, the largest increase since the beginning of November, according to data released Thursday by the Department of Labor.
However, despite this increase, the moving average of the last four weeks remained practically stable at 212,000 initial applications for unemployment benefit. In the week ended 16 December, the recipients of unemployment assistance totalled 1.875 million, an increase in the number of beneficiaries by 14,000 compared with the previous week. In November, the US economy accelerated the pace of the creation of new non-agricultural jobs to a total of 199,000 new jobs, compared to 150,000 the previous month, reducing the unemployment rate by two tenths to 3.7%.
