A strong earthquake hit Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on January 1.

According to USGS, the magnitude was 7.5.

Shaking was felt in widespread areas and tsunami warnings were issued for Niigata, Toyama, Yamagata, Fukui and Hyogo prefectures, also along the Japan Sea Coast.

This video shows what appears to be tsunami reaching the coast of Joetsu City, Niigata.
