On the first day of the new year, hundreds of Canadians from coast to coast embraced the time-honored tradition of polar bear dips. Since at least 1920, Canadians have welcomed January 1st with exhilarating plunges into icy lakes, oceans, and rivers, and this year was no exception.

From Halifax to Vancouver, scheduled events drew participants ready to shriek, shiver, and smile their way into 2024. In Nova Scotia, Joanie McNally of Sackville wasted no time, making a splash in the frigid ocean waters at Queensland Beach on the South Shore at 9 a.m. With the temperature hovering around -5°C, McNally and 11 fellow swimmers shed their winter gear for a bracing dip, marking a unique start to the new year and, for McNally, achieving a personal goal.

“It’s a bit of a challenge to start the new year on the right track,” McNally remarked just before taking the plunge, emphasizing the symbolic and invigorating nature of this chilly tradition.
