Indonesian volcanoes erupt, making sounds that shake homes.

CCTV footage from Nanda Firdaus' house in Bukik Batabuah village, Agam regency, West Sumatra province, shows that the shaking in her house occurred at 6am.

The sound of the explosion shifted the direction of the CCTV camera and blew the curtains off the bedroom door. The cat, which was restless near the door, was startled by the bang.

"In the CCTV footage, there was someone crying. It was me, crying from the pain in my chest from the sound," said Nanda Firdaus.

Bukik Batabuah village chief, Firdaus Putra Tunggal, said based on data from the Marapi observation post, PVMBG Bukittinggi, the eruption occurred at 06:03 am, sending an ash column as high as 1500 metres into the sky.

"The Marapi eruption has covered our area within a 5km radius of the crater with ash and volcanic rocks the size of an adult man's thumb," added Wali Nagari Bukik Batabuah, Putra Tunggal.

Mount Marapi in Agam is on alert or level II, with a danger radius of 3 kilometres from the crater at the top of the mountain.

A major eruption of Mount Marapi on 3 December 2023, exactly one month ago, killed 24 hikers.
