At least three people were killed and dozens more injured when two trains collided in West Java, Indonesia, on Friday morning.

Some 500 travellers were evacuated following the collision of a Turangga train and a local commuter line train between the Haurpugur and Cicalengka stations along the railway in Bandung at around 6:03 am local time on January 5.

Footage shows the wreckage, with several coaches derailed and one falling into a nearby flooded rice field.

Authorities said three crew members died and more than two dozen were wounded in the crash.

The railway section was temporarily closed as officials investigated the cause of the accident, public railway operator PT KAI said.

The company said in a statement: 'This morning, Friday, January 5, 2024, an accident occurred between KA Turangga (65) and KA Commuter Line Bandung Raya (350) on the Haurpugur - Cicalengka route in Bandung, causing the KĀ route to be temporarily impassable.

'Currently the relevant units are at the location to carry out the handling and evacuation process.

'Regarding tickets and train travel operations via the Haurpugur - Cicalengka route for today's departure, Railmin will soon provide updates via WhatsApp KAI121 at number: 0811-1211-1121 (official, verified and with a green tick) to passengers or publications in the media.

'Passengers are advised to remain calm and follow the directions of officers on the ground.

'Sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you.'
