SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): HSIEH KUO-HSING, Researcher from Taiwan
"In addition to cultural exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, there's a stronger cross-Strait connection in terms of folk beliefs and folk customs. With more cross-Strait exchanges, we are seeing more and more communications, and the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are learning from each other and influencing each other. This is a positive development."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): ZHENG ZHENMAN, Professor with Xiamen University
"In a sense, the cultures in Fujian and Taiwan are both related to the ocean. Mr. Hsieh and I have been doing research in this area for a long time, especially on beliefs and folklore about the sea. The marine cultures of Fujian and Taiwan basically have the same historical origin. Through the cultural cooperation and exchanges between the two sides, we are looking into their common roots."
This was the 11th event of the "Cross-Strait Scholars Face-to-Face" program co-hosted by Xiamen University and the Academy of Chinese Culture.
