STORYLINE:
South Korea's military conducted a live-fire exercise off its western coast Friday afternoon, the country's defense ministry said.
The marine forces in the western border islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong launched the drill from 3:00 p.m. local time (0600 GMT), according to the Ministry of National Defense.
Evacuation orders were reportedly issued in the islands earlier in the day at the request of the South Korean military.
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Seoul.
