Five injured in China when stray rocket from Myanmar hits salon
At least five have been injured by a stray artillery shell that fell on a street in China amid an armed conflict in neighbouring Myanmar.
Surveillance footage shows employees and female customers at a beauty salon in Nansan, in south-western Yunnan province, jumping up in fear as the shell struck outside.
Another clip captured the moment it landed on the street, narrowly missing a parked vehicle and damaging several shops.
The violent blast sparked immediate panic and confusion among residents, as seen in a third video shot by an unnamed bystander.
Chaos erupted as multiple people were injured in the explosion. One person can be seen lying on the ground, with bloodstains visible on their clothes.
Several merchants near the incident site confirmed to local media that on the afternoon of January 3, a shell fell near a residential area, resulting in injuries.
One merchant mentioned damage to the walls of their shop. A staff member from the Zhenkang County People's Hospital said that on that afternoon, more than five people injured by the shell were brought to the hospital for treatment.
Armed conflicts in northern Myanmar between the military and rebel groups have been ongoing since democratically elected Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi was overthrown in a coup in 2021.
China initially ignored the bloodbaths which saw civilians murdered by soldiers but in recent months has called for a ceasefire due to the continuous shelling which led to Wednesday's incident.
Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a press conference: 'China is highly concerned over the recent conflict situation in northern Myanmar.
'We strongly condemn the casualties of Chinese personnel due to armed conflicts and have lodged solemn representations with relevant parties.
'China once again urges all parties involved in the conflict in northern Myanmar to immediately cease hostilities, take practical measures to avoid the recurrence of malicious incidents threatening the peace of the China-Myanmar border and the safety of Chinese personnel.
'China will take necessary measures to safeguard the lives and property of its citizens. Foreign shells falling into Chinese territory are causing injuries.'
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reminded Chinese citizens to avoid going to northern Myanmar and called on everyone living close to the border to evacuate as soon as possible.
However, Myanmar and its lawless Shan State, continue to attract Chinese gangs due to its sprawling meth labs hidden in the jungles, which supply the drug to most of Asia.
