Popular Jodd Fairs night market reopened following blaze that ravaged 120 stalls in Thailand
A renowned market in Bangkok has been temporarily closed for investigation for at least a week by a district office following a fire incident.
The market, Jodd Fairs, situated behind Central Rama 9, was engulfed in flames on December 13 at approximately 4.21 PM.
Firefighters and the rescue team successfully extinguished the fire in around 20 minutes.
According to the inspection, it was revealed that one woman was injured as she fainted, and 120 stalls were damaged by the fire.
The Huai Khwang Police Station is currently investigating to determine the cause of the fire and assess the cost of the damages.
Suriyachai Rawiwan, deputy director of the Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in Bangkok, stated that upon receiving a report of the fire, firefighters from four stations were dispatched to the scene to control the blaze.
After the incident, officials investigated the site and worked to control the ashes to prevent any potential reignition.
In addition, Paitoon Ngammuk, director of the Huai Khwang district office, disclosed that 120 stalls, primarily selling fashion clothes, were damaged in the fire.
The district office, in collaboration with the police station, plans to set up a joint administration to compensate the victims, providing a budget of 11,000 baht per stall.
Simultaneously, investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire, including the possibility of theft occurring during the incident.
The affected area has been designated a danger zone, and the duration of closure—whether for seven days, 15 days, or longer—will be contingent upon the safety assessment for reopening.
Paitoon emphasised the need for improved security measures, suggesting the installation of signs to indicate entry points.
Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of exercising caution, especially for food stalls such as those selling stir-fried morning glory, which involve high heat and flames that could potentially spread to nearby tents.
However, the Jodd Fairs Facebook page announced on December 14 that all zones have been reopened.
The post mentioned that the scene had been cleared and inspected.
