People evacuated from region after chlorine gas leakage in northern India
Officials of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police force among others rushed to rescue and evacuate people after chlorine gas leaked out from two cylinders kept in the open, in northern India's Uttarakhand.
This incident took place in Jhajra, Prem Nagar police station area in Dehradun on January 9.
Visuals showed the officials having gathered at the spot of the incident and conversing about the same. The officials wore masks to combat the effects of the chlorine gas, which can cause breathlessness among other reactions. According to a report, six such chlorine cylinders were kept out in the open near the field and two of these started to leak. As per a report, the Dehradun District Control Room received the information of this gas leak and subsequently, the officials sprung into action. Along with the NDRF, SDRF and police, a fire team and officials of the CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) team were also present at the spot.
There was a residential area nearby and people subsequently complained of breathing difficulties. The officials worked swiftly to evacuate them into a safe place. They also conducted a joint operation to stop the gas leakage and also remove the cylinders from the area. Besides breathing problems, inhaling chlorine gas can also lead to a burning sensation in the chest besides causing irritation to the eyes and nose as well as coughing.
