Greek ritual goes all out to expel evil including dressing up as spirits
A village located in northern Greece goes all out to expel evil spirits with an ancient pagan ritual.
Footage from January 9 shows locals in costume marching through the village streets.
According to filmer, the ritual represents satyrs and the god of festivity Dionysus expelling evil spirits.
Residents dressed as anthropomorphic goats with imposing masks and girded with large bells surrounded a person dressed as Dionysus who carried an amphora filled with wine.
The filmer told Newsflare: "The ancient custom of Babugera which has its roots in the worship of the god Dionysus is being revived to exorcise evil throughout the ages.
"In ancient times the Babugera were the satyrs, the god's followers, which is no coincidence. In 1996 archaeologists brought to light an important place of worship of Dionysus just 2 km outside of the village Kali Vrysi with objects of worship of the god.
"Kali Vrysi in the foothills of Mount Menoiki is a place rich in traditions, with a history lost in the depths of the centuries. The welcoming residents respect the traditions of their ancestors, preserve them, and most importantly pass them on to the younger generation in an experiential way through events unique to Greece."
