Vibrant scenes were seen on January 7 as thousands attended the Black and White carnival held in Narino, Colombia.

Impressive floats, parades, and poetry were on show during the festival that celebrates the togetherness of Hispanic and native cultures.

Annually, in the capital of the department of Narino is held the traditional Carnival of Blacks and Whites, a holiday that this year will take place between 2 and 8 January and in which parades, cavalcades, poetry recitals are held, Flower battles and the coronation of a queen in San Juan de Pasto, southwest of the country. Today, in addition to the painting on the faces, this festival is recognized by the parade of giant figures manufactured by artisans of the region.

This celebration, which brings together elements of Hispanic and native cultures, was named by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and This year, tourists and residents are expected to gather in Pasto to paint their faces and dance to the rhythms of the orchestras and troupes.
