The South Dongting Lake is located in the southwest of Dongting Lake, China's second-largest freshwater lake.
So far, 97 such islands have been built, becoming a paradise for migratory birds.
SOUNDBITE (Chinese): WANG LONG, Staff of Yuanjiang management bureau of South Dongting Lake Nature Reserve
"We have mainly improved and restored habitats of some important species. First, we carried out ecological water conservation work. We've built some projects to conserve water so that when the dry season comes, we have enough water for migratory birds and wild animals in the habitats. Second, we grew some submerged plants and habitat trees for migratory birds to provide enough food for them."
According to a recent survey, the number of migratory birds in the South Dongting Lake has increased by more than 10,000 compared to the same period last year.
