Firefighters have today begun search operations and inspections at a fire-ravaged market following the deadly earthquake that killed more than 200 in Japan.

Footage shows officers from the Fire and Disaster Management Agency sifting through the charred ruins of Wajima City's Asaichi-dori Street, a shopping strip in the hard-hit Ishikawa Prefecture, on January 10.

A blaze had erupted at the local market following the massive earthquake on New Year's Day.

Local media reported that as of Wednesday, the death toll stood at 206, with seven casualties dying at evacuation centres from injury and sickness. Fifty-two people were still missing as snowfall hindered rescue efforts.
