"I am currently located next to a main road in the northern part of Quito, the capital of Ecuador. There are few people on the streets and the traffic is not as congested as it usually is.
A group of masked gunmen on Tuesday broke into a television station in Guayaquil, a city in the southwest, and held the TV station staff hostage. The Mayor of Guayaquil, Aquiles Alvarez, said in a press conference that the attacks on police stations and burning of vehicles that occurred in the city resulted in eight deaths and three injuries.
In addition, according to the Ecuadorian police, two police officers were killed by armed militants in Nobol, a city in the province of Guayas. Faced with the current severe security situation, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on Tuesday declared 'internal armed conflict' and mobilized the army to combat organized crime linked to drug trafficking, following an escalation in violence in the South American country."
