Indonesia volcano erupts: Authorities raise alert status of Mt. Marapi and evacuate residents to safe areas

Volcanic eruptions in western Indonesia still continuing.

Authorities raise the alert status to level 3, with the eruption danger zone now within a 2.8 mile radius of the crater at the summit of Mount Marapi on 9 January 2024.

Residents in the danger zone were evacuated to safe areas.

Chilling footage recently emerged showing Mount Marapi erupting violently on Sunday (3 December 2023), sending black smoke as high as 3,000 metres into the sky.

The eruption, accompanied by a hail of rocks, killed 24 hikers.

Marapi has continued to erupt with increasing activity since that day. Today it has been over a month since the eruption.

The eruption has also led to the closure of the international airport.
