SOUNDBITE 1 (English): DU XIAOHUI, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia
"In the wake of the ongoing cholera outbreak in Zambia, the government and people of China wish to show our solidarity as a trustworthy all-weather friend at this time of sorrow, especially in a year when the Chinese and Zambian people are going to celebrate 60 years of establishment of our diplomatic ties together. A team of 10 medical experts from the 24th Chinese Medical Team and the 26th Chinese Military Medical Expert Team will be dispatched immediately to provide on-site medical guidance, sensitize the local people to anti-cholera knowledge and offer other services wherever necessary at the National Heroes Stadium, in accordance with the instructions of the Zambian authorities."

The ambassador also underpinned a water supply project under construction by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, aiming to supply clean and safe water to around 750,000 people in Lusaka, the Zambian capital.

Hichilema commended China for its support during this difficult period, saying that the support measures would not only address cholera in the short term but also contribute to the long-term eradication of the waterborne disease.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): HAKAINDE HICHILEMA, Zambian President
"Deeply deeply on behalf of the people of Zambia express our appreciation to China yet again coming to the table to support the Zambian brothers and sisters during this difficult time of the cholera outbreak."

Zambia has been grappling with cholera since October last year, which has affected nine out of the country's 10 provinces. The Ministry of Health reported a total of 7,830 cumulative cases, with 310 deaths.
